Hadrah To Be Empowered In Perlis

KANGAR, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- The art of Hadrah, a kind of song or ode, will be promoted in Perlis to ensure its healthy growth in the mainstream of modern arts.

Perlis National Department for Culture and Arts (JKNN) director Rahmat Md Noh said Hadrah, advocated by village elders, would be given a breath of fresh air, including by setting up groups comprising youths.

Speaking to reporters after the 2013 Perlis Arts Appreciation at the JKKN Auditorium last night, he said Hadrah was unique in its own way.

Rahmat said there were only six active Hadrah groups in Perlis and efforts were underway to set up more, including by training the young.

Hadrah involves the use of the kompang (a Malay drum) by a big, seated or standing group interspersed by dances, including that of a clown.

In conjunction with the performance, four Hadrah groups, including those comprising youths, perform while acompanied by silat, 'terinai' and 'layang emas' dances and the traditional pounding of rice flakes.

Also staged was the traditional wedding of the Malays of Perlis, accompanied by a Hadrah performance.
